Defensive Driving Courses for Traffic Violations

Mecklenburg County

The Safety and Health Council of North Carolina offers six defensive driving course alternatives for traffic violators to attend in Mecklenburg County.

4-Hour Defensive Driving Course - (Green School)
This course offers an opportunity for drivers to receive a PJC for eligible traffic infractions like speeding and red light violations. Students learn essential defensive driving techniques that can reduce collision-related costs, injuries, and fatalities. The four sessions include "Rules, Regulations, and Responsibilities", "Driving Conditions", "Unsafe Driving Behaviors", and "Aggressive Driving". Call (704) 644-4201 to register or click here to register on-line

4-Hour Defensive Driving Course - SPANISH (Blue School)
This course is the same as the Green School but conducted entirely in SPANISH.  Call (704) 644-4201 to register or click here to register on-line

4-Hour Defensive Driving Course - Alive at 25 (Yellow School)
This course is similar to the Green School and offers a PJC for an eligible traffic infraction. However, it specifically targets the needs of the inexperienced 15-20 year old drivers. DDC-Alive at 25 focuses on taking responsibility as a driver, why young drivers underestimate risk, maintaining control in driving situations, and handling peer pressure. Call (704) 644-4201 to register or click here to register on-line

8-Hour Defensive Driving Course - Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving (Red School)
This is a highly participatory class that assesses the individual's driving behavior, and then involves the students in developing an action plan to improve driving behavior and personal responsibility. A driver's behavior is a reflection of their attitude. Students are directed into understanding how their driving results from choices they make and that the responsibility of safe driving is their own. Appropriate violations for this course include excessive speeds, Passing a Stopped School Bus, Careless and Reckless Driving, and Driving While License Revoked.  Call (704) 644-4201 to register or click here to register on-line

8-Hour Defensive Driving Course in SPANISH (Orange School)
This is the Spanish version of the "Red School" program. However, instead of a literal translation of the 8-Hour red school course from English to Spanish, this program is customized to specifically address Hispanic driving problems:  DWI, poor understanding of basic traffic laws, and lack of child car seat use, and safety belts. The "Orange School" emphasizes responsibility and choice, but reduces the reading and writing involved in the 8-Hour DDC-Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving, know as the "Red School". Call (704) 644-4201 to register or click here to register on-line

8-Hour Defensive Driving Course - Under 21 (Purple School)
"Under 21" targets 16-20 year old drivers who have been charged with Driving After Consuming by Person Under 21 or the more serious violations addressed in the Red School. The first half of the course is the DDC-Alive at 25 course. The second half is training specific to North Carolina DWI laws, zero tolerance, the effects of alcohol, and the consequences of driving while impaired. Call (704) 644-4201 to register.
